Dugongs

Gentle Dugongs can be found grazing on eel grass in the Pacific and Indian oceans.  These unique marine mammals can grow up to 3 meters (10 feet) in length and weigh as much as 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds). Though closely related to manatees, dugongs are easily distinguished by their fluked, dolphin-like tails. With their small eyes and what appears to be a permanent, contented smile, encountering one while snorkeling is a peaceful and unforgettable experience. Despite conservation efforts in many countries, Dugong populations continue to decline due to the destruction of seagrass habitats, ingestion of plastic waste, poaching, and accidental entanglement in fishing nets.
