Campbell River

BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA

Jump in the Campbell River in mid-August to mid-September and witness an incredible underwater spectacle.  A brisk current takes you past thousands of Pink salmon flashing by on their way up to spawn further up the river.  After travelling thousands of kilometers over their 2-year Pacific journey the salmon are returning to their home rivers in a final act of spawning the next generation. Among the Pink salmon look out for the occasional Chinook salmon bruisers weighing up to 50lbs.  The current provides an effortless 2 km snorkel in clear, shallow water.

Getting There

From Victoria drive 3 hours up the Island Highway to Campbell River or from Vancouver via the ferry to Nanaimo.  Drive to the snorkel exit point at the Myrt Thompson Trail Head at the end of Maple Street first.  Have a look at the river so you will recognize where to exit on the way down.  For the river entry point drive 5 mins up the Gold River Hwy to the Logging Bridge. It is important to only snorkel the lower reaches of the river so as not to disturb the spawning grounds.  To avoid walking 2 km in a wetsuit remember a waterproof case to put your phone and credit card in for the taxi ride back.

Land Adventures

Throw in some fishing rods and try your luck fishing the river.  After the thousands of fish you saw how hard can it be…..  The nearby alpine lakes of Forbidden Plateau offer an great multiday hiking experience in Strathcona Park.
